Machiel (1993) is a belgian guitar player and composer.
In 2012 he started studying jazz guitar at the conservatory of Maastricht, where he had guitar lessons of Jan Formanoy and Edoardo Righini.
In 2014 he went to the conservatory of Brussels to have lessons of Fabien Degryse and Peter Hertmans for guitar.
Because the interest in composition was always present and started to grow even more, Machiel took lessons from Kris Defoort, in which he had the chance to further develop his writing and personal taste.
While studying, Machiel founded the band ‘Abstract INC.’, a sextet that forms a symbiose between improvisation and composition and released an EP in 2020.
With the trio 'Teddy's Brain Drain' the focus is on simple and honest melodies. In 2023 their first EP was released.
And next to this project there is ‘No Wasabi’. A duo guitar band together with Rebekka Van Bockstal. Together they write and create for this band and in November 2019 this band released their first CD.
Machiel also experiments with sounds, electronica and free improvisation. This you can hear in the duo HEREMANS/SENSMEIER, a band together with german saxophone player Jon Sensmeier.
Machiel was also one of the founding and steering members of the free impro collective BIC (Brussels Impro Collective). This collective organises events and workshop, and works together with other arts, always with free improvisation as the connecting link.
